The 2024 Golden Globes, aired on January 19th. The 2024 Golden Globe Awards proved to be a night of glamor, surprises, and historical milestones. Notable wins in the film and television industries this year were from Oppenhiemer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, and more. History was made when Lily Gladstone became the first indigenous actor to win in her category. From Emma Stone’s heartfelt acceptance speech to playful interactions between stars like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, the night was filled with memorable moments both on and off stage. Here is a brief recap of the most notable wins at the 81st Golden Globe Award Ceremony.
“Oppenheimer” clinched the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Drama), marking the fifth win for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, including accolades for best director, best original score, and best performances in supporting and leading roles. Gladstone, being the first indigenous actor to win best performance by a female actor in a motion picture (drama), for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, expressed gratitude for being able to speak some of her Blackfeet language, highlighting the historical significance of her win for Indigenous representation in film. She dedicated her award to Indigenous youth, emphasizing the importance of seeing themselves and their stories authentically portrayed on screen. Additionally, Emma Stone secured the Golden Globe for her outstanding portrayal of Bella Baxter in the film, earning the title of best female actor in a motion picture (musical or comedy) in Poor Things. “Succession” won the Golden Globe for best television series (drama), “Barbie” earned the first-ever Golden Globe award for cinematic and box office achievement, and “The Bear” won for best television series in the musical or comedy category. During the acceptance speech, Lionel Boyce, expressed gratitude to the restaurant community for their support, acknowledging the contrast between the characters’ experiences and the reality faced by those in the industry. “Beef” totaled 3 wins at the Golden Globes. The show won the Golden Globe for best television limited series, anthology series or motion picture made for television. In addition, Steven Yeun took home the award for best male actor in a limited series, anthology series, or television movie for his portrayal of Danny Cho, while Ali Wong secured the prize for best female actor in the same category for her role as Amy Lau.
However, captured celebrity drama and backlash was also captured during the famous Golden Globe Awards. Most notably, disdain and controversy regarding host Jo Koy’s insensitive joke about Taylor Swift. Koy said, “As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL: On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.” Swift, who was nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement at the 2024 Golden Globes for her record-breaking concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, showed a straight face, and obvious annoyance, while the crowd laughed awkwardly. Swift recently responded to criticism from NFL fans regarding the media attention surrounding her attendance at games, in support of her current boyfriend, football star, Travis Kelcey.
Meanwhile, another noteworthy incident involving Swift occurred offstage during the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Videos captured Selena Gomez sharing something with Swift and Keleigh Teller, eliciting animated reactions. Speculation suggests the conversation revolved around Kylie Jenner allegedly preventing Gomez from taking a photo with Timothée Chalamet. Selena Gomez clarified that her whispered conversation with Taylor Swift and Keleigh Sperry did not involve Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner, however fans and flowers were not amused.
