Book Review: Shatter Me Series

Over the last few months, I’ve seen the Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi all over tiktok, and I finally decided to read it after watching countless videos about how amazing it supposedly is. Looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t want to read these books sooner, they are so good! Shatter Me is a dystopian series that consists of six books and five novellas. The first few books are in Juliette Ferrars’ pov, and the last three books are in the pov of multiple characters as well as Juliette. The series starts when Juliette, a 17 year old girl living in North America which has been split up into sectors, who has an unusual power that can kill anyone who makes direct contact with her skin, is locked up in an asylum, and has been stuck there for the past 264 days. Juliette is an unstable girl going insane from being in isolation for so long, so when she leaves the asylum, she doesn’t know who she is and what she is capable of, but with the help of some new friends and Warner, Juliette discovers more about who she really is and more about her powers. Juliette displays a lot of character growth and development as the books go on, and as she slowly discovers who she really is and what the full extent of her power is. The first book, Shatter Me, isn’t the most entertaining since most of it is just world building. It could use more action and dialogue, but it does serve as a great introduction to the world and society the characters are living in. The second and third books, in my opinion, are probably the best books in the series. In them, Juliette learns to understand her true feelings and discovers more about her power. The last three books have multiple character POVs and also show Juliette’s childhood memories. The last novella takes place right after the last book and serves as the real conclusion to the series. Overall, the Shatter Me series was very well written and fast paced, had just the right amount of romance, and definitely was one of the best book series I have ever read. If you haven’t read this series yet, I highly recommend you start reading it soon.
