On Friday, January 31, 2020, the Carle Place High School Student Organization and Key Club held an assembly for the high school concerning their annual Battle of the Classes, Battling for a Cause event. Last year, for the Long Island Tourette Association, students fundraised $23,000.

Battle this year is on February 28, 2020. This year’s charity that students will be fundraising for is Duke Children’s Dr Kishnani’s Pompe Disease Fund. This charity was student chosen. Pompe disease is a rare, inherited condition that affects multiple organ systems.  The buildup of glycogen in the body negatively impacts the heart, respiratory function and skeletal muscles. At Duke, they developed the only known treatment for Pompe Disease.

Battle of the Classes, Battling for a Cause is an event where grades 9-12 compete against each other in various events. They earn points based on various elements, such as fundraising, sportsmanship, participation, and events. Some events this year are Tug of War, Just Dance, Kahoot, Inflatable Obstacle Course, and Basketball.

During the week of Battle, Coin Wars will be going on. Students from each grade are to put coins in their grade’s container located in the high school cafeteria. However, if you put paper bills in other grades’ containers, it reduces the number of points in that grade’s container. Coin wars will be on Monday 2/24, Tuesday 2/25, and Wednesday 2/26 during all lunch periods.

The money fund-raised will help research new forms of therapy, and to work towards improving the quality of life for patients. Roseann Favicchia and John Favicchia are both employees of the Carle Place School District and their granddaughter, Sophia Giusto, is impacted by this disease. Sophia is only four years old.
